Text size variation on phones - this report uses simple html to reduce disc space - looks ok on a PC but phones may produce random text size changes.

10 Txs and associated triffids provide the amusement.

Map as provided for the event.

At the start Gary explained that there were steps up to the roads and paths which allowed access over the River Chelmer.  He also indicated that this may be an 'unusual' event - he was right!

Here you can see the 1 Km grid, not a large area as shown.   However, Gary had managed to cram the Txs into an even smaller space as on the satellite view below.

You would think that having the Txs close together would make the event too easy but as you can see from the results, most of us got very confused by the overlapping chains, often walking by Txs on the way to what we had decided should be our next target.

As an example, check out the times that individuals found H and M at, despite them being on the same frequency!

Was this a 'Triffid Blindness Epidemic', is there any hope of a vaccine ?

To give an idea of scale, the distance between F and H is just on 400m  - the length of a Multi-Chain

Multi-Star Rosie

Runner up (and down steps) Roy

Top ghost hunter Colin F

So how did you do it Rosie?

Took a few bearings at the start, and was surprised that they all went in the same direction. My Joker was C so was aiming for B initially. Stopped on a small bridge over a lock to confirm a direction for B and was surprised that it seemed to be the far side of the A414 from the start ( I later realized that I had been standing directly below the large powerline - Doh! ) As a result I chose the wrong footpath and ended up by doing a big loop before arriving close to G. Gary was in the trees so knew there had to be something to find.

After clocking a first at G, K seemed to be the strongest. Went through the trees and missed it on the first pass. Approached from alongside the road and Colin Merry appeared and just beat me in, but second is good.

Now realising that B was other side of main road, chose somewhere to cross, right adjacent to the TX, ahead of Chris. Spent the next 5 or so minutes trying to spot the triffid, Chris had circled round and spotted it right away (3rd).

Already knew where I was heading for my Joker, C , found within a few minutes, but Steve had beaten me.

Decided that there must be something of interest over the river so thought that I would go there next. Descended the bank and found that I was right on top of H. Colin F appeared as the next transmission came up, I spotted the triffid and tried to dive into the tree, and failed, luckily Colin F also failed so I lunged in again and managed to pip him to the post.

M didn’t seem strong and being a red, thought that I would be tricky and decided to try for the remaining 3 easy ones. Returned over the bridge and immediately found L, good. Now back for A and F.

Returned to the small bridge and decided to do F first, there were already a couple of people prospecting, went further down the path, but as the TX came on there was a pile up unfortunately I was not nearest, so only managed to beat Colin M.

Straight back to A, on my own, found on one transmission. Went to bank my points at C, then thought that I would have a stroll over the bridge to look for M.

Took the same way down the bank and found a path in the right direction. Walked until bearing turned 90 degrees, turned up the bank and saw a narrow passage through the undergrowth ,forced my way through and soon located M.

That’s it! Stroll back to C, nearly forgetting to dib again. I Think that luck played quite a big part.

Many thanks to Gary for this interesting and different event.

A big thanks to Gary, who was in the middle of a house move and other non-DF activities, meaning that we had to meet at 9 pm on Saturday to transfer equipment. He was on site at 7 am on the Sunday to set up this puzzle for us.  That's DF-edication!

At the picnic, after discussions about where the Txs actually where,  we couldn't believe how hard and confusing it had been.  The constant changes of direction on unmarked paths that took you part way there and then stopped, the main paths under the road and beside it, plus other amateur activity close to 1915 kHz .... yep  all had amusing stories of  their confused antics.

Colin M now has the equipment in Kent ready for the next event on September 3rd.  Watch the noticeboard  for details.
